Adrian placed his fork down on his mostly-emptied plate and sighed contentedly. Jeremy looked opposite him to find the younger man lifting up the newspaper with one hand, and grasping his cup of tea with the other; he wore an uncharacteristic grimace on his face, and the dark circles under his eyes were a sign that he hadn't slept all that well the night before. It was almost intimidating. "Who put a bug up YOUR ass?"
"Huh?"
Jeremy was surprised at the genuine look of confusion in Adrian's green eyes. Obviously, he hadn't really been paying attention, nor expecting Jeremy to speak. So, he reiterated; "Who pissed in your cheerios?"
"What are you talking about? I didn't eat cereal..."
"Bit of breakfast humo-... know what? Nevermind." Jeremy rubbed his forehead in aggravation; apparently, Adrian wasn't exactly 'awake' yet. With a grumble, the groggy young man took a sip of his tea, none too pleased that it had grown cold on account of his own dawdling.
Jeremy studied his facial expression with interest; it had been a long time since he saw such jumbled features. He caught the man glaring down at the table from the corner of his eye, and soon returning to the newspaper in his hand. His cell phone; of course! He'd been getting poor reception since he came; trying to communicate with the dreadful device was damn near impossible, and he was almost certain that this was contributing to Adrian's sour mood.
"Still nothin, huh?"
"What do YOU think?"
Smirking and folding his arms, Jeremy raised his eyebrows a little, chuckling quietly. "Can't talk to yer' ladyfriend? Becca, was it?"
Obviously, this struck a nerve; Adrian's eyes narrowed. "She sent me a message on my way here, and I haven't been able to respond sense. It's been 3 days now. She's going to think I don't want to talk to her!"
Jeremy grinned, taken aback by the younger man's outburst. "Cool your heels, pal. Sheesh."
A slight whimper broke Adrian's train of though. He looked down, and to his left, to find Sampson looking up at him imploringly, one paw spatting playfully at the table. The two locked eyes for a long moment, neither relenting for even a second. Sampson's glance shifted to the plate in front of the man, and right back up. Another desperate whimper finally broke Adrian's resolve; he hung his head for just a moment. "No matter where I go, there's something awaiting me with big, pouty brown eyes."
A warm smile lit the older man's face. Adrian may have denied it, but Jeremy knew better; and, in fact, he had warned the kid about it years before. He knew the day would come...
Sampson growled in a final attempt to win the man's leftovers; big brown eyes boring holes into the man, who stared back into those shiny brown depths. "You're mocking me, aren't you?" ________________________________
