Damaged Goods | A Canon ShortIt was a beautiful spring afternoon. The sun was shining, and there was barely a cloud in the sky. Our typical humid veil hadn’t set in just yet, and a pleasant breeze swept about the courtyard.
"Mind some company?"
A familiar voice took me by surprise. I turned to face the young woman, and gestured for her to sit. She smiled at me, and graciously accepted the invitation.
"Late lunch?" She asked.
I nodded, as I finished the last bite of my sandwich. As she stirred her salad, I found my eyes riveted on the colorful mix in her bowl. It was almost a shame to eat such a work of art, and I’ll be the first to admit it looked far more appetizing than my peanut butter concoction. Fishing the apple from the paper bag in front of me, I took a bite as I pondered just what to say to her.
Normally, idle chatter would suffice, but given the strange question her niece had asked me earlier that morning, conversation seemed a little more difficult than usual. Bu
A Pinched Nerve | A Canon ShortIt was a peaceful night; a cool, damp end-of-summer evening, surrounded by a thick wall of trees and shrubs and wild flowers. It was nice. And it would have proven a good place to clear my head, had my thoughts not still been so preoccupied.
This felt ridiculous. What did I think I was going to accomplish by running away? No matter where I went or how long I was away, one thing remained constant; and that is exactly what I was running from. I felt so insufficient. I was a grown adult, so why was I acting like a whiny teenager?
When had all this come about, anyways? When was this seed sown?
In retrospect, I guess one could say it was sown a few years ago, on a rainy day, under the ratty red umbrella that I shared with her. And I think it finally started to sprout on a cool evening a few months back, as she sat, apologetic, and still tipsy in my passenger seat, trying to sober up on some greasy cheeseburgers.
