Any semblance of comfort fled her at the sight of the familiar man. Becca's stature grew meek; she suddenly seemed frail, and afraid to move. Yet she couldn't take her eyes off him; just the sight of him evoked so many feelings and emotions. The memories of the pain and chaos he'd caused surged through her in an instant, and it sent an involuntary shiver up her spine. Oh, the things she wanted to do to the man! Hatred, anger, and sorrow all swelled within her at once, and tears began to sting her eyes. The shift in motion beside her did little to avert her attention. Obviously, Adrian had returned to his seat next to her. She could feel his intense eyes hone in on her; she knew he'd picked up on her turmoil immediately. It was like some sixth sense of his, and at times like this, she found it was more than a little irritating.

For a long moment, he simply stared at her, his mouth slightly ajar, as if waiting for her to explain. Not even so much as returning his gaze, she continued to stare at the familiar figure on the other side of the restaurant. When no response came, he didn't bother asking what was wrong; he simply followed her gaze to pinpoint what had left her in such a state. It didn't take him long to find the source of her anxiety; The pretty boy across the room, with the dark hair and the masculine jawline. The jerk he'd seen Becca with numerous times back in college; Dylan.

"Hm. I see." He stated simply. Becca bowed her head in slight embarassment, finally averting her eyes from the man. She wanted nothing more than to flee, but she was now trapped in the booth with 'daddy long legs'; perhaps his tall frame would do a sufficient job of hiding her from view? Her hands fidgeted nervously with the wrapper from her straw, tearing it into several small pieces, curling and rolling each of those pieces into little paper balls. Adrian watched her in bewilderment for a moment, wondering if she had actually contemplated spitballing the man. No, Becca wouldn't do something so childish; even to someone like her ex-fiance, despite how much he deserved such treatment. He turned his attention back to the idiot near the entrance.

The longer he studied Dylan's movements and gestures, the further one of his eyebrows raised in amusement. A 'brilliant' idea dawned on him; his lips slowly curled into a crooked smirk, and he nudged lightly at Becca's side with his elbow. She was clearly irritated, and didn't want to be bothered about her ex; but despite her wishes, his elbow continued to poke and pester her.

"What do you want?" She hissed, swiftly rearing her head to shoot him a sinister glare.

He said nothing, just raised his arm and pointed. She knew exactly who and what he was pointing at, but she sighed and looked up anyways. "Yeah, what about him?"

"Watch him."

"But, I-"

"Trust me, just... watch him for a minute."

She sighed, but studied the man anyways. Nothing struck her as particularly interesting or amusing. "And... why am I watching him?"

"Good lord, you're impatient. Keep watching."

Becca, though obviously uncomfortable, hoped this wasn't some cruel sort of joke. The jerk looked to be attempting to flirt with the waitress, to which she scoffed. To her surprise, Adrian leaned in a little closer and began to speak just softly enough for her to hear.

"Nice t-shirt, sir. Do they come in adult sizes as well?"

It took Becca a moment to realize what he was talking about; Dylan's shirt was skin-tight, in what she could only assume was a feeble attempt to highlight his 'assets.' She saw the waitress escort him to a small table, where he continued to chat her up.

"Oh, it looks like he's trying to impress her. 'Who's the big oaf who worries more about his appearance than some high maintenance women? This man!'"

Becca began to crack a smile.

"This glowing complexion doesn't keep itself up, you know. I have a special loofah that does wonders for my skin. Feel it, go ahead. Smooth as a baby's bottom. Partially because I can't grow facial hair, but nevermind that. I need something pink and fruity. Chop chop."

The woman smiled, and looked at Adrian in disbelief, shaking her head just a little. "You... you're bad."

"That may be true, but it's making you smile."

To be continued :D
Full title: "Captain Skidmark and the Rimshots"
Work in Progress.

Part of a scene I've been brainstorming for a while now. The title is derived from two derogatory nicknames Becca has for her ex, who is being poked fun at in this tidbit. Becca's obviously distraught when she sees him walk into the restaurant where she and Adrian (still just friends at this point) are trying to enjoy a nice dinner with a couple coworkers. So in an attempt to cheer her up, Adrian 'narrates' Dylan's actions and makes fun of him from afar. Yeah :P

Characters belong to me.
